ONEIRONAUTS is a photographic project I undertook during the COVID lockdown in Italy in 2020. I edited pre-lockdown portraits of members of a photography collective we were forming at the time. By isolating and emphasizing specific physical features, I combined these with geometrical shapes to create decomposed portraits.
With this series I aimed to represent the stasis experienced during the lockdown, where we appeared mostly as glitched frames on online video calls. The clear, complete visual memories of the faces began to fade and abstract in my mind. This project visualizes how our representation of other people during isolation gradually shifts from a fully embodied, complete image to a decomposed, flattened abstraction, floating in nothingness.
